Blog Assignment 3: Reflections on Contact.

This is an amazing science-based fantasy story. The process of story is consisted by advanced science and technology. As far as I am concerned, I prefer to look it as a universe scientific documentary in a sense. In reality, this is basically a heated debate on religion and science.

“If humans were the only life in the universe it would be a terrible waste of space.”
The famous novel’s words arouse many of my adolescent nice memories.
I was born in a small remote plateau city, and in summer night the sky of hometown was so beautiful, I gazed at the shining stars, they were so closed to me. At that time I always ask myself: any other alien in the universe and can we contact them?
When I grew up, I learned more scientific knowledge and came to a modern city for my study, the lights of the city is so dazzling and I can’t recall it any more.

When I first time left China and went to the abroad, I chatted with an Arabic passenger on the plane and he asked me “what is the religion in China?” That is a question I never thought about it, quickly searching answer in my mind but no result, “I have no idea, maybe most Chinese like me they don’t have religions.” “Oh how could that be!” he was very surprised and had much sympathy for that.

“Oh, my god Where is my god?”
I searched some information through internet and found that there are many religion organizations in China like Taoism, Buddhism, Islam and also Christian, but the number of religious is less than 5%. Compare to religious, there are 100 million 10% Communists in Chine, it is nearly 10% of the whole population!
Can we consider that the Communism is the religion of the 100 million people? No, I don’t think so. Because religion is a kind of belief which come from the bottom of heart, and should not contain other poppers.

Just as described in the novel, even through human has created brilliant culture today, but in a vast and mysterious universe, we are still so tiny and helpless. I believe that the effect of religions on people is also very important. In my opinion, people who ignore the religions are arrogant, but completely compliance with religion maybe meant weak and fragile.

I am an atheist and I was inspired by Ellie, she encountered so many difficulties and setbacks: her father’s death, the shortage of research funds, engineering blue print technical problems, distrust by government due to religious beliefs and so on. However, for pursuit truth, she reached the end bravely.

Blog assignment 2

It’s a very attractive online movie and I do appreciate the way that Annie had taken to express herself. I would like to recommend it to my friends.

First of all, I believe that Annie should be respected, not only she is an environmentalist and a proponent of sustainability. As an American, she had spent 20 years and traveled to 40 countries, concerning about all people’s living conditions and the destiny of the earth, even though she was always misunderstood and criticized.

I agree on the points presented in the video, but in my opinion it is not realistic. What a great pity it is! On the one hand the government’s main purpose is not “for the people take care the people”, the government just wants to grasp the political power and defeats the other communities, unfortunately its all depend on tax revenue. In fact government and corporations, there are numerous internal relations between them, they rack their minds to make people working hard, consuming and then obtain maximum profits.
One the other hand, the development of different countries and regions are still in extreme imbalance, and this could not be changed in short term. If a country is experiencing famine, how can the government give up trashing development for climate change?

Anyway, as far as I am concerned, I would like to change some details in my daily life for our finite resource like water, paper, and electricity conservation.

Blog assignment 1

How to Deal with the Privacy Invasion
Through Snooping Bosses we learned: GPS technology, Xora and Surf control software, video surveillance all of them are the secret snitches, not only what you do at work, but also your spare time activities could be monitored by employers. Employees look like be completely controlled. Even though mobile phone, blogger and face book are also not secure, maybe our personal information have been compromised unwittingly, that even lead to a serious consequences. People are father and father away from individual privacy, it cause a tendency of panic and anxiety in contemporary society.
Facing various high technologies, how could we deal with the privacy invasion? Maybe the security industry will develop rapidly since the high demands. Then we can imagine that the employees will use more advanced software to fight against the employers monitor. As a result, there is only a feeling of suspicion and distrust among people; I believe that is the really creepy word!
How to protect our privacy and build up a homogeneous society? In my opinion, on the one hand we should consummate our laws and relative regulations constantly, especially for new technology, establish clearly definitions and boundary conditions as soon as possible. For example, one kind of software could just be used in a certain field and definite period as a surveillance instrument, otherwise it is illegal. On the other hand, as employees we should advocate professional ethics and honesty virtue.
